KAYLA ALVES
Managing Attorney
Kayla is a criminal defense attorney based in Lewiston, representing clients across the state in homicides, sex crimes, serious felonies, appeals, and matters involving immigration detention. She has begun working with the Habeas Project, advocating for individuals held in immigration custody and challenging unlawful detention in federal court.
Before becoming a defense attorney, Kayla served as a prosecutor. She has also experienced the justice system from the other side. That chapter of her life changed her path — and gave her a perspective few attorneys can offer. She understands what it feels like to face the power of the state, and she brings that insight and empathy into every case she takes on, including her work on habeas petitions for detained immigrants.
Today, Kayla is eligible to practice in state and federal court and is committed to fighting for fairness, dignity, and real second chances. Her journey hasn’t been traditional, but it’s shaped her into the kind of advocate people can count on when it matters most.
